Best Time to Visit Snæfellsnes
The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is a year-round destination, but the season changes its character — from long summer days along the cliffs to winter nights with the aurora behind Kirkjufell. Here’s how to time your visit.
Summer (June–August)
The most accessible season:
- Long daylight and the easiest driving for the trip north.
- Every road and corner of the national park open.
- Seabirds along the Arnarstapi and Hellnar cliffs.
- Busiest and priciest — and no Northern Lights, as the nights stay bright.
Winter (November–March)
The dramatic season, and a photographer’s favourite:
- A real chance of the Northern Lights over Kirkjufell — one of Iceland’s signature aurora shots.
- Snow-dusted peaks and a quieter peninsula.
- Short daylight and a long, exposed drive — a guided tour, especially a super jeep, takes the winter roads off your hands.
Spring & autumn (April–May, September–October)
The underrated shoulder seasons:
- Fewer crowds and better value than peak summer.
- Lengthening or shortening days, with the first or last aurora of the season.
- Mixed weather — keep plans flexible.
When is best for the Northern Lights at Kirkjufell?
Between roughly September and April, when the nights are dark enough. Kirkjufell and its waterfall make a famous foreground, so a clear winter night here is a highlight for aurora photographers. As always, sightings can’t be guaranteed — see our Northern Lights tours.
So when should you go?
- For long days and coastal birdlife: June to August.
- For the Northern Lights over Kirkjufell: November to March.
- For fewer crowds and better value: spring or autumn.
