Heading east from Reykjavík, the route passes through the villages of Selfoss, Vík, and Kirkjubæjarklaustur before reaching Skógafoss, one of Iceland's most photographed waterfalls. The journey continues across the vast black desert of Skeiðarársandur, where glacial rivers carry millions of tonnes of volcanic sand to the Atlantic each year, constantly reshaping the coastline.

Just before the lagoon, the route passes Öræfajökull glacier, home to Iceland's highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, at 2,119 m.
