About this experience

Dive into one of the world's most extraordinary underwater environments on this wetsuit snorkeling tour at Silfra fissure, located within the Þingvellir National Park UNESCO World Heritage Site, approximately 50 km from Reykjavík. Silfra is a freshwater canyon formed where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates drift apart — meaning you will literally snorkel between two continents.

The visibility in Silfra is exceptional, with sightlines of at least 100 metres in water so pure it feels like floating through air. Adventure Vikings is the only snorkeling operator in Iceland offering wetsuit snorkeling, giving participants the freedom to dive below the surface and explore the underwater canyon up close — something a drysuit does not allow.

No diving licence or prior snorkeling experience is required. All necessary gear is provided, and your English-speaking guide will brief you fully before entering the water. The snorkeling portion lasts approximately 30–40 minutes, with the full tour running around 4 hours 30 minutes including hotel pickup, transfer, briefing, and suiting up.

The tour includes morning hotel pickup from downtown Reykjavík, drop-off after the tour, free underwater photos taken during your snorkel, and hot chocolate to warm up afterwards. A GoPro camera rental is also available on request.

Experience details

Your tour begins with a hotel pickup from downtown Reykjavík, approximately 75 minutes before the snorkeling session starts. You will be transferred to the Silfra car park at Þingvellir National Park, where your Adventure Vikings guide will meet you.

After check-in, your guide will provide a full safety briefing and help you suit up in your wetsuit. You will then enter Silfra fissure and spend approximately 30–40 minutes snorkeling through the crystal-clear canyon, drifting between the tectonic plates of Europe and North America.

  • Full gear fitting and safety briefing before entering the water
  • 30–40 minutes of guided snorkeling in Silfra
  • Free underwater photos captured during your session
  • Hot chocolate served after the snorkel
  • Return transfer to downtown Reykjavík

The water in Silfra is cold; the wetsuit covers your entire body but does not fully eliminate the chill. Participants should be prepared for cold-water conditions and dress warmly for before and after the snorkel.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need snorkeling or diving experience to join this tour?
No experience is required. Adventure Vikings provides all necessary gear and a full safety briefing before you enter the water. You do not need a diving licence. Participants simply need to be comfortable in water and able to swim.
What is the difference between wetsuit and drysuit snorkeling at Silfra?
A wetsuit covers your whole body and allows you to dive below the surface to explore the fissure up close. A drysuit keeps you drier but limits submersion. Adventure Vikings is the only operator in Iceland offering wetsuit snorkeling, which they consider the best way to experience Silfra.
How cold is the water in Silfra, and will the wetsuit keep me warm?
The water in Silfra is very cold year-round. The wetsuit covers your entire body but does not fully protect you from the cold. Participants should expect to feel the chill and are advised to dress warmly before and after the snorkel session.
What are the physical requirements for this snorkeling tour?
Participants must be at least 12 years old, between 145 cm and 200 cm tall, and weigh between 45 kg and 120 kg. You must be physically fit, able to swim, and comfortable in water. Pregnant participants are not recommended to join due to cold water temperatures.
Where exactly is Silfra, and how do I get there?
Silfra fissure is located within Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site approximately 50 km from Reykjavík. Hotel pickup from downtown Reykjavík is included. If driving independently, park at Þingvellir P5 and walk 400 m to the Silfra car park.
What is included in the tour price?
The price includes all snorkeling gear, pickup and drop-off from downtown Reykjavík, an English-speaking guide, free underwater photos taken during your session, and hot chocolate after the snorkel. A GoPro camera rental is available at an additional cost.
