Discover the raw beauty of Sólheimajökull, one of Iceland's most accessible glacier tongues, on this guided 3-hour glacier walk led by a certified guide from Icelandic Mountain Guides by Icelandia. No prior experience or technical skills are required, making this an ideal introduction to Iceland's glacial landscapes for families and first-time visitors alike.
Your expert guide will lead you across a frozen world of contrasting ice textures — brilliant white ice, deep blue ice, and perfectly transparent crystal-clear ice. Along the way, you'll safely approach dramatic crevasses and water cauldrons carved into the glacier's surface, while your guide explains the formation of these features and their relationship with the surrounding volcanoes and mountains of South Iceland.
The hike offers outstanding photography opportunities at every turn. All necessary glacier equipment — including crampons and safety gear — is provided, so you can focus entirely on the experience. Warm clothing, rain gear, and sturdy hiking boots are required and must be brought by participants.
This tour meets at the Sólheimajökull Base Camp, located along Road 221 just off the Ring Road. It is a meet-at-location tour with no hotel pickup service.
After arriving at the Sólheimajökull Base Camp, you'll meet your certified glacier guide and be fitted with all necessary glacier equipment before heading onto the ice. The walk is graded as easy and is designed to be accessible for participants of varying fitness levels, including families with children aged 10 and over.
On the glacier, your guide will navigate you through a landscape of striking ice formations — from opaque white surfaces to vivid blue and glass-clear ice. You'll have the opportunity to safely observe deep crevasses and glacial cauldrons up close, with your guide providing expert commentary on how these features form and how the glacier interacts with Iceland's volcanic environment.
Throughout the hike, there are ample opportunities to photograph the glacier's dramatic scenery. The tour concludes back at the base camp after approximately 3 hours.
