About this experience

Step onto the ancient ice of Sólheimajökull glacier for a 4-hour adventure that blends a classic glacier hike with a beginner-friendly ice climbing session. Led by expert guides from Icelandic Mountain Guides by Icelandia, this tour is designed for anyone curious about life on the ice — no prior experience required.

As you trek across Sólheimajökull, you'll navigate a dramatic frozen landscape shaped by water cauldrons, sharp ridges, and deep crevasses. Your guide will read the glacier as you go, selecting the ideal spot to set up the ice climbing gear for your group.

Once rigged, every participant gets a genuine turn on the ice face — a fun, achievable challenge that requires nothing more than enthusiasm. With a maximum of six guests per guide, you'll receive attentive instruction and plenty of time to find your footing on the wall.

The meeting point is the Sólheimajökull Glacier Car Park on Road 221, just off the Ring Road. All glacier gear and safety equipment are provided, so you simply need to arrive dressed for the outdoors and ready to climb.

Experience details

Your adventure begins at the Sólheimajökull Glacier Car Park on Road 221, where you'll meet your guide and be fitted with glacier gear. Arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled departure time.

The hike takes you deep into the glacier's interior, where your guide explains the geology and history of Sólheimajökull while leading you safely across the ice. You'll pass striking formations including water cauldrons, crevasses, and sculpted ridges.

When your guide identifies a suitable section of the ice wall, the group rigs up for the ice climbing introduction. Each participant takes a turn ascending the face with full support from the guide and group. The session is paced so everyone has a meaningful experience on the ice.

The full experience runs approximately 4 hours. Bring warm, layered clothing and rain gear; hiking boots and rain gear can also be rented on-site for 1,000 ISK per item.

Why choose this tour

This tour stands out for its combination of two distinct glacier experiences in a single outing. Rather than a straightforward hike, you finish with a genuine ice climbing session — a memorable skill-based activity that most visitors never attempt.

The small-group format of six guests per guide means you're never lost in a crowd. Your guide can tailor the pace, answer questions, and give each climber proper time on the wall.

All technical equipment is included in the price, and the operator — Icelandic Mountain Guides by Icelandia — is one of Iceland's most experienced glacier guiding companies. Minimum age for participation is 14 years.
