Verified operatorSkaftafell: Falljökull Glacier Walk – Mountain Guides
3 hours 30 minutes
Step onto the ice of Sólheimajökull glacier on this 3-hour guided hike in South Iceland. A certified guide leads you across crevasses, ice walls, and ash-streaked snowfields, with all safety gear included and views stretching to the Westman Islands.
Sólheimajökull glacier, an outlet of Mýrdalsjökull — one of Iceland's largest ice caps — offers some of the most accessible and visually dramatic glacier hiking in the country. This 3-hour guided hike takes you directly onto the ice from the glacier's base camp, where your certified guide will fit you with crampons, a harness, a helmet, and an ice axe before setting off.
The route leads around the murky glacier lagoon and up onto Sólheimajökull's snow-covered surface. As you ascend, the landscape transforms: untouched white snow is veined with black volcanic ash from past eruptions, and vivid blues emerge from deep within the ice. Formations such as glistening icicles, towering ice walls, deep crevasses, and occasional ice caves appear throughout the hike. Note that colours and formations vary with the seasons.
In clear weather, the higher elevations reveal sweeping views across dramatic mountains, the Westman Islands, the black sand beaches of the South Coast, and ancient lava landscapes. Along the way, you can drink directly from pure meltwater streams running across the glacier.
Your guide will explain how glaciers form, why Iceland is so celebrated for them, and what threatens their future. They are also happy to answer questions about Icelandic nature and life, and will photograph your group at the most scenic spots on the ice.
Your tour begins at the Sólheimajökull glacier parking lot. Arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled start time to meet your guide at the base camp.
After a full equipment fitting — crampons, harness, helmet, and ice axe — your guide delivers a safety briefing covering the route and how to move safely on ice. The group then walks around the glacier lagoon and ascends onto the glacier's surface.
The tour is not wheelchair or stroller accessible. It is not recommended for people with back problems or heart conditions. Pregnant travellers should consult a doctor before booking. Minimum age is 12 years.
This hike is led by David the Guide, a team of certified, experienced glacier guides based in South Iceland. Every guide is trained to navigate glacial terrain safely and to adapt to changing conditions, so you can focus entirely on the experience.
All safety equipment is provided and fitted on-site, meaning you need no prior glacier experience to join. The 3-hour format gives enough time to reach dramatic ice formations and elevated viewpoints without requiring a full-day commitment. The meeting point at Sólheimajökull is self-drive accessible, making it straightforward to combine with other South Coast stops on a road trip.
Safety gear: crampons, ice axe, helmet, and harness. Certified glacier guide.
